Character education is an umbrella term loosely used to describe the teaching of children in a manner that will help them develop variously as moral, civic, good, mannered, behaved, non-bullying, healthy, critical, successful, traditional, compliant or socially acceptable beings. Concepts that now and in the past have fallen under this term include social and emotional learning, moral reasoning and cognitive development, life skills education, health education, violence prevention, critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and conflict resolution and mediation. Many of these are now considered failed programs i.e., “religious education”, “moral education”, “values clarification” Today, there are dozens of character education programs in, and vying for adoption by, schools and businesses some are commercial, some non-profit and many are uniquely devised by states, districts and schools, themselves. A common approach of these programs is to provide a list of principles, pillars, values or virtues, which are memorized or around which themed activities are planned. It is commonly claimed that the values included in any particular list are universally recognized. However, there is no agreement among the competing programs on core values (e.g., honesty, stewardship, kindness, generosity, courage, freedom, justice, equality, and respect) or even how many to list. There is also no common or standard means for assessing, implementing or evaluating programs Statement of Goals: The primary goal of Malaika orphanage Children Foundation is to positively impact the lives of youth through our programs that teach character education and life skills using education as a platform. Additionally, our goals include increasing the number of youth in our Malaika Character education and leadership development programs to impact nation by expanding the implementation of our programs in high schools and communities across the country. The success of our participants will move us toward our vision of becoming a preeminent positive youth development organization. Seven Core values Malaika teaches young people (ages 6-24) life skills and character education through forming teams in various schools. What makes Malaika effective in building positive character traits in young people is The Malaika Life Skills Experience, a curriculum developed by experts in the field of positive youth development and delivered by trained coaches. Through this program, participants learn about Nine Core Values and how to apply them to life skills and transfer the positive values to everyday life. PROGRAMS Young Entrepreneurs program The Youth Entrepreneurs Program (YEP!) targets 15-24 year old youth in which they are taught an entrepreneurial curriculum in school-club setting to learn professional development, entrepreneurial, business and financial skills. This club is designed to be hands-on and to encourage children to explore new ideas. During YEP! Club meetings, students are taught entrepreneurial, business, financial, and professional development skills. These skills are taught through games, community member interaction, hands-on activities, and small group discussions. As a culminating club project, students have the opportunity to start and run their own enterprises. Character education and Leadership Development Program. Malaika is committed to making positive contributions to the community, and to promoting a democratic way of life based upon justice, equality, and respect for all people through establishing in schools a Character Education and Leadership Development Program. We define character education as the deliberate use of all dimensions of school life to foster optimal character development. The goals of Character Education and Leadership Program are thus essentially the goals of raising good children: youth, who understand, care about, and act upon the core ethical values (such as diligence, compassion, integrity, and fairness) that make for a productive, just, and democratic society. As they grow in character, young people grow in their capacity and commitment to do their best work, do the right thing, and lead lives of purpose. Effective character education involves creating the kinds of classroom and school environments that enable all students, without exception, to realize their potential to achieve these vital goals. The Character Education and Leadership Program (CELP) identified 11 broad principles as defining a comprehensive approach to character education: • Promote core ethical values as the basis of good character. • Define character comprehensively to include thinking, feeling, and behavior. • Use a comprehensive, intentional, proactive, and effective approach. • Create a caring school community. • Provide students with opportunities to engage in moral action. • Provide a meaningful and challenging curriculum that helps all students to succeed. • Foster students’ intrinsic motivation to learn and to be good people. • Engage school staff as professionals in a learning and moral community. • Foster shared moral leadership and long-term support for character education. • Engage families and community members as partners in character education. • Evaluate the character of the school, its staff, and its students to inform the character education effort. Aflatoun Child Social and Financial Education Aflatoun, an internationally recognized program, utilizes an activity based curriculum to teach children their value as humans, and to emphasize the importance of financial education. The program targets 6-14 year old children giving them an opportunity to save money for a personal financial goal, and to create micro enterprises. The Aflatoun program focuses on five core areas including personal understanding and exploration, personal rights, saving and spending, planning and budgeting, and participating in social enterprises. The program introduces students to important financial and entrepreneurial concepts such as financial responsibility, social responsibility, savings, and enterprises. In addition to presenting a theoretical context for financial management, children are encouraged to actively manage their money by saving weekly with a specific goal in mind. Malaika program on HIV & AIDS Education for Young People. Why is HIV/AIDS education for young people important? Malaika Program on HIV & AIDS education for young people plays a vital role in global efforts to end the AIDS epidemic. In 2012, more than one third of all new HIV infections were among young people aged 15-24 (780,000). While this number is falling, HIV-related deaths have been on the rise among this group. In fact, HIV is now the second most prolific cause of death among young people worldwide. “Young people remain at the centre of the epidemic and they have the power, through their leadership, to definitively change the course of the AIDS epidemic.” Providing young people with basic AIDS education enables them to protect themselves from becoming infected. Young people are often particularly vulnerable to sexually transmitted HIV, and to HIV infection as a result of drug-use. Acquiring knowledge and skills encourages young people to avoid or reduce behaviors that carry a risk of HIV infection. Even for young people who are not yet engaging in risky behaviors, AIDS education is important for ensuring that they are prepared for situations that will put them at risk as they grow older. AIDS education also helps to reduce stigma and discrimination, by dispelling false information that can lead to fear and blame. This is crucial for prevention, as stigma often makes people reluctant to be tested for HIV and individuals that are unaware of their HIV infection are more likely to pass the virus on to others people Youth Financial Literacy Education A program targeting 15-24 year old youth giving them an opportunity to save money for a personal financial goal, and to create micro enterprises with three core elements of understanding one’s rights and responsibilities, financial knowledge and skills as well as creating sustainability in the world through conducting social and financial enterprises. Through fruitful and long lasting partnerships, locally and internationally, PEDN presents this program to youth with an openness to critically explore and maximally utilize the opportunities presented to them by the world they live. Girls empowered to empower Girls Girls Empowered to Empower Girls (GEEG) program provides underserved community girls the opportunity to gain entrepreneurial skills to create their own business ventures to save for college and share their knowledge and experience with other Girls. Empowered to Empower Girls (GEEG) program provides less privileged community girls the opportunity to gain entrepreneurial skills to create their own business ventures to save for college and also share their knowledge and experience with other girls. The program aims to enable individuals to become confident contributors within their society while furthering their personal ambitions for growth and development. GEEG utilizes a unique, hands-on curriculum which focuses on empowerment by emphasizing personal development, financial saving, and entrepreneurship. GEEG stands as an innovative model for empowerment as it encourages girls to seek opportunities to share their knowledge with individuals from their communities to produce a ripple effect of learning and influence Cyber and general bullying Education can help considerably in preventing and dealing with the consequences of cyber bullying. Malaika has educational campaign with kids and teens. It addresses ways to become inadvertent cyber bullies, how to be accountable for their actions and not to stand by and allow bullying (in any form) to be acceptable. It teaches to teach kids not to ignore the pain of others. Self esteem Low self-esteem is an underlying reason for such problems as bullying, drug and alcohol abuse, eating disorders, school dropouts, teenage pregnancy, crime, violence, aggressiveness and low academic achievement. Malaika hypothesis is that by creating a program that fosters high self-esteem we can reduce these problems while increasing student motivation, responsibility and personal effectiveness. Malaika has established a program Implementation of self esteem by forming Character education and Leadership Development team a student group that will address issues of low self esteem encouraging activities like Dance Therapy in schools. Conflict Resolution Malaika fosters children’s ethical and social development through the Character Education and leadership program in conflict resolution, violence prevention, intergroup relations, and character education. Malaika defines the term peaceable as meaning a “safe, caring, respectful, and productive learning environment.” A major premise of Malaika is that teachers learn to model the behavior they teach through direct instruction, and schools assume the values they seek to nurture among young people in all facets of their program. As an example of how Malaika operates, it recommends that students and teachers make decisions together about classroom norms at the beginning of the school year and that teachers give early instruction in problem solving and decision making so the skills can be used and reinforced throughout the year. Malaika provides a grade-level-specific curriculum for prekindergarten through grade 12 that has a unified sequence of content and skills. To entrench conflict resolution in schools, Malaika programs are purposefully tied to school improvement. The content of the Malaika curriculum is grouped into five components: community building, understanding conflict, perception (understanding different viewpoints), anger management, and rules for fighting fair. Literacy programs The Literacy program is tailored to train children ages 4-6years of age through the fundamental entrepreneurial skill of utilizing knowledge through reading and writing. Malaika meets its literacy program goals through visiting children day care centres reading books to kids and donating a book to each child.
